Network Monitoring Tools

By asecret ·
I spent an afternoon searching the internet for any good network monitoring tools but could only find Unix and SPARC stuff.
Does anyone know of anything good out there for a wide range of Admin tasks such as monitoring traffic, logging events etc, etc
for the NT platform ?

Do you have NT server? If so, it has network monitoring built-in. In control panel, click on network, then services. Add network monitoring and relay agent, allow Nt to copy some files and reboot. This will allow you to monitor network activity such as broadcast traffic, Ip renewals, etc. Performance monitor, also included in NT server allows you to monitor and log (or chart or send alerts) concerning the performance of machines on your network (processor %; paging files, disk performance if you type diskperf -y at the command prompt, etc.). Under user manager for domains|policies you can set auditing for such things as logons/object access, etc.
I hope this helps.

Hi there,

Net X-Ray no longer exists, but you can get the same front end with better functionality from Network Associates' Sniffer Basic. Or, check out the better tool, Sniffer Pro, which can do LAN, WAN, and High-Speed analysis with the same software. It also has expert analysis tools that finds errors for you and gives an explanation of what has probably caused them.

You can download a copy from www.nai.com, or e-mail me for the demo version - I work for the company as a Sniffer Systems Engineer.
