Network Printers continuously printing

By auxperc ·
Help! We have several network printers that are printing continuously. They print one line of junk at the top and will not stop until we shut the printers off. Any known Viruses? We are running Active Directory. Let me know

Thanks,

G

Not much info, but try the basic. Delete the job on the printer, clear the queues on the print server, updated your print drivers on the server. I tend to use PS(postscript) drivers as they provide the most compatibility.

If that doesn't help, what program are they printing from? What are they printing that causes this to happen? Is it the same user printing the same item on all the printers, or is it all users printing different things to different printers? Give more info.

Sounds like a driver issue. It could be RAW vs COOKED (Unix terms) in the printer definition. What you are describing sounds like the line feed is being processed but not the carriage return. So the printer thinks it is printing, but your document gets to be a mile wide after while.

I have seen this when using an ink jet printer driver printing to a laser jet printer.

There is a very new virus out called w32.bugbear It is ranked 2nd right now next to klex.h If you have not patched your IE 5.X in the past 18 months their is a chance you have gotten it. The symptoms noted on symantecs sight directly corelate to your. Here is an excerpt:

Security Response has seen that because the worm does not properly handle the network resource types, it may flood shared printer resources, which causes them to print garbage or disrupt their normal functionality.

Here is a link to the article(remove all spaces after pasting to your browser bar)

w32.bugbear@mm.html">http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.html

There is a removal tool and instructions. The instructions are pretty straight forward. We got this virus today and removed it promptly, I advise you do the same.

Good Luck,

SLM

This is characteristic of using a line printer driver (inkjet) to print on a page (laser) printer. Look for one or more of your printers to be set up with the wrong driver.
