Network slowdown

By andrew ·
I have a small network of three computers.
The spec. is below. The two main ones are listed as the other is not relevant I have only recently purchased the PIII and ever since, the network has been very slow on high usage apps and games. I have tried a lot of things, such as reinstalling various things, etc. but it has not worked

Specification
A) PIII 450 128MB
B)Celeron 300A 128Mb

Both have Linksys 10/100 PciEther II cards
and a 5port hub

What kinds of things are you using the network for: are you transferring large files from one computer to the other? is the hub 10/100? autosensing? if third computer is not 10/100 and the hub not autosensing, that will slow the entire network to 10Mb.

Without knowing how you are using the network, or in what nature you are experience slowness, I can only suggest that you run your applications locally (copy all necessary files to the local machine and run it completely locally). Is the problem fixed? If not, then the problem is not network related but machine specific.

my only question to you is the a 10/100 auto,
basically what this means is if you only have a 10 base hub your getting 10mbps, even though your nic cards are 10/100. Answer change your hub.

My first question is whether or not your 5-p hub is rated 10/100 or 10 only? If rated for 10 only, then you've got to set manually that each card on your PCs are set to 10.

Secondly, check on each card whether or not you've got other net protocols enabled. If so, then use only one, preferably TCP/IP only and remove the rest.

Thirdly, check the 3rd PC's NIC card, too. maybe it is causing packet storms.

Finally, try to operate two PCs at a time and run your apps/games. Rotate the testing to the next two PCs. This should give you idea which caused the slow response.

I had the same problem using LinkSys gear.
I had to manually set everything to 10 Mb., reboot, and everything was fine, after that, I set everything back to auto to regain 100 Mb.
Dont blame your workstations, Its just inexpensive gear.
Yeah, I was disappointed too!

PS: I had a problem adding a new built workstation to the domain as well and had to go through this exercise again. quite frustrating!
I hope LinkSys is working on driver auto sense negotiation issues, or I will be retiring this hub soon.
