network ticks error

By mwogaman ·
we're running an nt file server, a nt workstation db server, win 95 on desktops and win 98 on laptops. the desktops and laptops for the most part have been running fine. recently we installed the mcafee anitvirus defense suite and now i've got at least two desktops that give "there have been more than 10 seconds between network ticks" error which is essence locks up the machines. sometimes we can ctrl/alt/del our way to normalcy, but it takes minutes for things to react. other times we haveto reboot and go through the process of scanning upon startup. anyone have any suggestions?

thanks for the help.

I would first remove McAfee and see if it goes away, then you know for sure that its the software. If it is McAfee, you can do a custom install of the product. Try to load only what you need. McAfee has a scan schedule program that will scan the HDD when no uses the pc for a certian amout of time. This causes problems here with accessing our AS/400s. Also in the status screen for McAfee you can choose to scan ALL files or only certian files, you may want to adjust that as well.

I did remove McAfee and did not receive the error for two days. Subsequently I have reinstalled the McAfee and for three days now I haven't had the problem. Go figure! Thanks for the help...

MacAfee has a habit of crashing or locking up when it is active on a network with a high number of network collisions. I believe there's an issue of broadcast packets it's expecting, and when it doesn't receive them it faults out. Is this issue onthe 95 desktops, or the 98 desktops? 98 is slightly more efficient in handling packets, so I'd suspect that if this were the problem it would be worse for the 95 machines. You may want to take a look at the network architecture and see if the problem systems are on the same hub, or on the last ports of separate hubs, etc etc.

Good luck!

Gave me some info I hadn't had before. I did end up unloaded the McAfee s/w and running w/o it for 2 days with no errors. I have had it reinstalled now for three days and so far so good! Thanks for the info!
