Networking a mac to my windows network

By buckonius ·
I have a windows home network using a SMG router with a 4 port hub built in and i would like to connect my wifes mac laptop to the network so she can make use of my cable internet connection. she doesn't need to access any files or share anything from the windows machines, she just needs to use the internet connection to connect to her email and work server. Her mac has OSX installed and also has OS9. Thanks in advance for any help!

All you really need to do is configure the Mac to be on your LAN and use the router as it's default gateway. Exactly how you do this will depend on how you have configured your LAN and the specifics of your router.

In all actuality, it's not difficult to give her file sharing functionality as well. Here are some excellent resources that should help you get set up:

http://www.labmice.net/networking

http://www.labmice.net/networking/ICS.htm

and the best overall site I know about interworking macs with pcs:

http://www.macwindows.com/

Good luck...hope this helps!

Specifically, if your router is running DHCP for
your home network, set up the Mac to use
DHCP in the TCP/IP control panel. If they're
using static numbers, set it to manual and
distribute a #. Set the router's internal IP as
the router address and you're good to go.
If she also uses the laptop at other locations
with different TCP/IP settings, you can use
Location Manager to predefine different sets of
settings, and she can choose between them
either at startup or at will.
