Networking w2k to XP with Firewire

By bryndabella ·
Is it possible to connect a W2k machine with an XP machine using firewire. Using the wizard in XP creates a set up file that does not run on w2k. A connection is made between the two computers, but I cannot see the drives on either computer. Any suggestions?

I've seen UniBrain most often used to connect systems in those situations.

In the folder options disable simple security on both computers.
Make sure the 2 computers are configured for
the same workgroup. Create identical accounts with the same passwords on both computers.
Putting these accounts in the Administrator group may save you some hassle (like loggin back and forth)
Create shares and in the security tab of these shared folder give the rights to the appropriate user or specify "Everyone". In the Permission of the share folder give the permissions you want the remote user to have.

So, this will give you all the chances for it to work. If not I suggest you use a Network cross-over cable with TCP/Ip and put the 2 machines in the same range of address. Ex: One to 192.168.1.2 and the other 192.168.1.3 with a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask

Good luck !

In a word No. This is because W2K does not support networking over firewire whereas XP does. The problem lies in the driver support for firewire, there are no third party drivers available apart from the drivers built into W2K. XP on the other hand has much better support for firewire. I spent about two weeks trying to get W2K to network over firewire about eighteen months ago without any success. Your only solution is to use a cross-over patch lead between the two PCs.

Why? It would be so much easier to use 2 cheap 10/100 ethernet cards and a crossover cable to accomlish the same thing. Plus you get a faster data transfer rate.
