Networking woes with 98SE and XP

By edentone ·
We have a 25 computer network with 2 servers, one an NT 4 SP6 running Exchange and another a Win 2K SP2 as our file and print server plus HIS 2000.

They are in different domains but they communicate without a problem. Some of the clients however, are not as fortunate. On 2 of the W98SE PCs we repeatedly lose network connections (i.e. mapped drives) and upon reboot, we get them reestablished.

On the new XP machine the problem is worse since we repeated lose the mapped drives, and also thenetwork printers. I have no idea why this continues to happen. It does not occur on the 2000 machines which make up most of our network.

Any ideas what could be happening?

What Version of 2000 server are you running (Server, Advanced, or Data)

Do you ever shut down the servers ?

If you do boot them up before all of your clients

I also must ask do your 25 computers log into the 2000 server via active directoryor is it more a peer to peer ???

I know my network is a bit smaller but still same concept 2000 Advanced, Windows XP, and Windows 98SE and I have no problem with loosing connections. I'm running active directory on my 2000 server also with DHCP,DNS.

have you tryed taking off your existing network dirvers and trying different one i had a similar problem with xp and 98 but when i changed the drivers they work fine. and i work with a school that has 98 and 2k machines and they didn't give me any problems after i changed the driver. are all your computers up to date using windows updates might also help.
and i have found 2k machines work well with 2k servers active directory
good luck
