New CPU, Motherboard - WindowXP Conflict.

By nidge700 ·
Windows will not boot after upgrading my CPU from 1.24 to 2.4 gigs. I had to change my motherboard after it failed. I was able to reinstall window afterwards but not now I am trying to change the CPU. I'm pretty sure its Windows stopping me. It thinks it's a different PC. Is there anyway of getting round this. I've e-mailed and rung Microsoft about it no luck, because it's OEM.

Well according to M$'s stated rules relating to OEM product

by OH Smeg In reply to New CPU, Motherboard - Wi ...

It is only available for original hardware. If you upgrade a substantial measure you should buy new OEM Product and use that with your hardware. Stepping from 1.4 to 2.4 Gig's I would consider to be a substantial Upgrade and according to M$ EULA you really should be looking at a New OEM Product in the form of an OS and any installed software.

As for Windows failing to accept a New CPU that doesn't sound very likely what should happen is that you may be required to Reactivate but if the computer is working it should at least Boot up to the point of Windows demanding that you reactivate the product/s.

If this isn't happening I would be looking at a misfit in the way that the CPU has been installed though if you where required to change the M'Board at the same time you will not have the correct drivers loaded and then I wouldn't expect the system to work at all. In a case like that you would have to do an In place Install by following the directions here

I thought that would be the reply but I was hoping that there would be a simple answer. Anyway thanks for taking the time to reply.
