Any

Hi,

Any IDE drive should work. The IDE interface has been standard for many years, and is just now being supplanted by SATA.

To be doubly sure open your case and check if the drive has a ribbon cable connected to it (a flat multiwire ribbon, about 50 mm wide).

The brand doesn't matter, they all conform to the same standards.

There is also a matter of the mtherboard's ability to support a drive with the capacity of modern drives. As you say your computer is 7 odd years old, you may find that the max size of drive it can support is around the 8GB, whilst the smallest drive now available is 80GB. There are ways around this problem, using drive overlays supplied by the drive manufacturer, but I won't go into that now.

WD

Yeah, I've never been unhappy with Western Digital drives. I use them almost exclusively.

As ozi mentioned, your motherboard may be limited by the size of drives that it can "see". Sometimes this can be fixed with a firmware upgrade to the motherboard (if Dell has one to offer). You can still buy the 40GB drives on Newegg, and if it doesn't work you can return it.

I've been burned by this size limitation on some older IBM systems where any drive over 40GB just wouldn't show up at all.
