Nimda Virus on my Win98SE

By ReJette ·
I have this virus on my Win98SE. The extension .eml is on all the files with an open envelop icon in various areas on my PC. I've been instructed to us a Virus Scanning Software to get rid of this virus. So, I purchased McAffee Virus Scan. Well,it wouldn't load. I get the following message:
MSIINST caused an invalid page fault in module MSIINST.EXE @ 0167:01006402.
There is a separate window that says:
Internal Error in Windows Installer
NOW WHAT SHOUD I DO? In my opinion, I thinkI should just get a new Hard Drive. Would this rid me of this virus??
Thanks!

A new hard drive would remove the virus, getting a new car will fix a bad muffler.

There is no need of a new harddrive. You can always get rid of the virus by formatting the existing harddrive. Only thing u will lose is your data. if it is not important you can go ahead and format. If you want more details on formating lemme know.

A new harddrive may not get rid of the virus, some including nimda (sounds like this is the one you have) can also reside in the bios. Just running a web search for nimda I found 36 sites that with nimda in the title, symantic was one of the first to come out with a fix for the nimda virus, check out their website.

The Nimda virus can be hard to remove. You need to download the Nimda removal tool from www.symantec.com - go to the Security Response tab, scroll to the bottom right side and click on the expanded list of removal tools, and download the remover - preferrably on a different machine that is not infected. If you are in a network envirenment, disconnect all machines from the network and clean each one before reconnecting the network cables. Boot the machine in safe mode and run the removal toolfrom the floppy. After it completes, you should be able to load your antivirus software.

A brief reminder: Once you have cleaned up your system by using a Nimda removal tool (I prefer Symantec's) and installed/updated your antivirus program, don?t forget to install the security patches for your OS and any Microsoft apps that you have installed (i.e., Outlook) as well.
