No Carrier detected

By drakenbaz ·
After being hit by the Klez virus and clearing it using F-prot, I am now left with 2 machines that appear to work perfectly except when I attempt to access the web. AOL for example, works correctly up to the point of detecting the carrier, It then clears down with the message "no carrier detected". Changing providers and modems has no effect the carrier is not detected. I have run all the testing equipment at my disposal, including "My PCTools on line" from Ontrack and "PC Check SE" but have been unable to clear the problem. All tests show no problems.
Any suggestions please?

Do you have 56K PCI modems? It sounds very much like the virus has modified one of the driver files. If you change modems, often you will not pick up a carrier (or a dial tone) unless you completely uninstall the original drivers. Some PCI modems install files which are run on Windows startup (PTSnoop.exe springs to mind) and if this is the case, it will often prevent a different modem from working. Many modems also have EEPROM areas in their firmware for storing settings and commands etc. It is possible that your virus attack may have reset or modified the stored parameters on the modem and therefore, although it my be dialling correctly, it cannot decode the CCIT/Bell tones and therefore doesn't see a carrier. I would suggest trying a hardware external modem and setting it up on a COM port as a generic 56k and trying AOL with that. If that works, then I'd suspect the modems. It may be that your modem drivers are also corrupted. Borrow a friends machine and download new drivers (uninstall the old ones first)

The Virus attacks Exutible files, Reinstalling the modem drivers, and the AOl should repair the problem. You need to go into safe mode and delete the modem in device manager, " Start, Settings. System, Choose device manager and select modems, this will drop down the trhe modems listed. Uncheck all. The Uninstall Dial up networking through the Add and Remove programs, Windows setup . If you know the INF file located in the Windows\inf directory , delete those. These has worked for me, and I havedone 3 computers with the same problem. Also, you can use MSconfig to stop ptsnoop from loading from startup.

Hope this Helps

The Klez virus infects and alters .EXE files. Try uninstalling THEN re-installing the drivers for the modem.

I have found that when no carrier message appears, theres been a physical change to the phone lines themselves. i.e. phone line surge protection added, another phone on the same line added, or two or more systems sharing a line, thus cutting the quality of the line itself.

run a irect line with no other breaks or surge protection and see if you can connect. If you can, then line quality was the issue. It may have just been coincidence that it happened at the same time you had the virus.

If running Win95 or 98 go to the Control Panel and remove the check mark from Communications on the Windows Setup tab in add remove programs. Reboot the computer and then reinstall the check mark in the communications box and go to the details button and verify that no additional boxes are checked that are not needed.
