NO DIAL TONE FOUND

By info ·
WHEN I TRY TO CONNECT TO THE NET I GET A 'NO DIAL TONE FOUND' MESSAGE.
I HAVE CHECKED CONNECTIONS, COM PORTS, TEL CODES AND NUMBERS - ALL SEEMS OK.
THERE IS NO '!' OR '?' NEXT TO MODEM IN DEVICE MGR AND IT SAYS THAT THE DEVICE IS WORKING PROPERLY.
HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING?
THANKS.

You could have a modem init string problem. can you open the modem under a terminal emulator and test the modem with ATD####### to see if you can manually dial out? or can you successfully issue a modem reset ATZ??

Verified dial tone by putting a standard telephone on the end of the line cord ?

If you have dial tone check the pins where the line cord plugs into the modem (normally does not happen but they can be mis-aligned or due to humidity corrode and eventually break off).

If no dial tone check the jack for the above problems.

Line cord is plugged into line not phone jack on the modem ?

Was this modem ever working ? New modem ?

Make sure you only have one modem loading.
located in Control panel -> modems should only be the one you are using.

When you attempt to dial there should be a soft click from the modem/speakers (relay/electronics transferring from on-hook to off-hook). by changing the modem to not check for dialtone and inserting several ,,,, at the beginning of the telephone number, to give it time to activate, you could force it to dial out. located in modem -> properties -> specific modem properties -> connection just uncheck wait for dialtone. If this is behind a PBX or small Telco the tone generated indicating dialtone may be out of tolerance for the modem's tone sensors.

Generally, you have taken a pulse on the telephone line to the modem. The drivers, setups, etc are all working fine, but the small reed switch relay that is on the modem is fused. This reed switch has to open in order to get the dial tone. At todays prices it is cheaper to replace the modem than it is to repair it.

Hope this helps,

Vickie

Make sure the MODEM volume is set to maximum.
put a pause (Comma is two second pause command) at the beginning of the dial string and listen.
Do you have dial tone?
If you do, you will hear it, then the MODEM will dial.
If there is a problem, there will be silence, or all kinds of static, or a 60 Hz tone. (The last is an improper ground in the phoneline.)

Go to Device Manager and click Properties for your modem. On the Modem tab clear Wait for dial tone checkbox. Have fun.
