No internet access to antivirus sites

By TMan12 ·
I have a pc running Windows XP home connected to a DSL connection. It has Norton Antivirus 2004 installed. I am able to connect to most web sites with the exception of Symantec, McAfee, and several other antivirus sites. I was able to connect to an On-line scan service, and the pc checks out clean. I uninstalled Norton and reinstalled it, and still cannot access the site for updates. The site cannot be reached via Live Update or directly from my IE. I downloaded Mozilla to see if it was a browser setting, and still no luck accessing these sites. There is no firewall software running on the p.c. Any suggestions?

for live update settings, open up AV 2003 then open up Live Update. In the upper left corner you should see an options button. click on the options button then click configure. Click on the HTTP tab and choose use internet options http settings. click on ISP tab and make sure use internet options in control panel is checked. This will allow live update to use your HTTP browser settings [which you say you can browse the internet so that means it works] for Live update.

As far as accessing web sites, TheChas has mentioned that there were some issues with some of the Microsoft critical updates that have recently been issued. Some of those were to IE. If you have installed them, that might be the problem.

Do you have Kazaa or any other file sharing program? What does it do when trying to get to those sights? Does it redirect you or just time out? There is a virus known as the bloodhound virus that does this.

I checked the settings under options and everything is set to use options in control panel. I will have to ck the latest updates, but do not seem to have this problem on any other pc's that I have updated.
No file sharing programs. Sites time out. I will ck for the manual removal tool for bloodhound. I ran 2 on-line virus scans that came up clean.

There are some recent viruses which block access to anti-virus sites.

You need to download the latest virus definitions on another machine manually then put them on a diskette and install them on your PC.

Not sure which online scan tool you used, but they can be fooled too.
