no more NTFS!!!

By Celsius451 ·
i was wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of windows 2000 and the disk format it rode in on, NTFS. none of my programs work (including partitionmagic) and there is no fdisk. i cannot just format the drive because it won't let me format while windows is active (obviously) and there seems to be no way to restart in dos mode. also, it won't let me make a boot disk. please help me out.

try this run winnt32 /0X off of your installation CD. This will create the boot floppies you need to install NT. Boot up your PC with the floppies which are created. During the process you will be able to delete the ntfs partition and reformat it as Fat.

I'm sure you realize that you hard disk will be wiped clean.

Okay, there are several easy ways to get around this. The first thing you will need is a license for another operating system. Let's say you have Windows 98. The CD-Rom is bootable and fdisk is located in the win98 folder.

Let's say you don't have a bootable cd-rom, but you've got some blank floppies, just no boot floppy. If you have windows 95 or 98, you can create a bootable floppy without any special software. All you have to do is copy the windows 9x version of command.com, msdos.sys, io.sys to the floppy and give all but command.com hidden, system, and read only attributes. Copy the windows version of fdisk (from your cd) on to the floppy. copy format.com to the floppy. Boot with the floppy. Fdisk, format /s (MAKE SURE TO USE /s) Reboot. Load CD-Rom Drivers. Install Windows.

If you need the necessary files (so long as you garantee you have a license for windows 9x) and/or detailed instructions, email me and I'll post them to my web site (and give you the address in a return email.

I'll take NTFS over FAT anyday. Are the apps your having problems with 16 bit? If so run them in their own memory space. A self-healing file system will save a lot of people some work provided NTFS is in use. Sorry you're not having much luck.

I would go with answer one. Extended partitions can not be deleted by Fdisk. They need to be deleted by startup process.
