Insert a windows 98 startup disk in floppy drive and boot system, select the option to run setup witout cd-rom support
Once the process reboot computer to see if it will boot,if not try using the floppy and boot
Once the command prompt appears typeSys C:
Reboot,if no operating system appears then it may be that the hard drive is bad or you have a virus, you can check for viruses using the ERD if you have one

another option is that someone deleted command.com from your boot disk or even possibly formatted it- but no one would be that malicious - would they???

Possible problems: 1. The hard disk might have stopped working. 2. Someone may have deleted system files or 3. A virus might have written over the MBR or deleted the FAT.

Possible solutions: Make a ESD (or ERD)write protect it and run the Fdiskcommand to see if system will detect the hard drive. If Fdisk does not detect the drive "No fixed disks present" time to get a drive. If it does boot us normally using the ESD use the command FDISK /MBR and see if it boots up normally. If the FDISK/MBR does not work see if it can see files on the hard drive and if it can run Diskscan from the ERD (Diskscan c:). When it askes to run a pysical scan let it. This might detect bad sectors on hard drive which is stopping it from find booting or finding the OS. If you have gotten to this point and it still is not working you might consider a O/S load (or repair) on the hard drive. But if you do I would do a FDISK first to change the image of the hard drive in case there is a virus on the FAT.

At any rate, good luck.

All these answers are good but you should also check setup to be sure it is booting to the hard drive and not the floppy or CD drives.
