No Power
Lockedby lora3498 · about 20 years, 1 month ago
I cannot get my computer to turn on or show any sign of getting power. I have replaced the power supply, changed motherboards, changed the battery on the motherboard, check connections and the power switch. I have taken the power supply to a computer store and had them test the power supply so I know it is okay. I have checked the wiring to the switches to be sure they are on correctly. I’m lost after this. I don’t even get any lights or any sounds from the power supply that it is starting up.

ummm first off what KIND of power supply AT or ATX or?? and second if it’s ATX have you double checked to make sure the power on switch cable on the case is connected to the right pins on the motherboard. If you don’t connect the power on/off switch on the case to the correct pins on the mainboard, you can’t turn the thing on.

note: since you said you checked “everything” and it appears that you have checked everything that would prevent you computer from turning on, it could be your processor is bad. The computer also wont’ turn on if you processor is bad.

you betcha !!! the power switch on the front of the computer case has a cable that has to be connected to the correct pins on the motherboard so when you push the button, the computer starts.

The switches in cheap ATX cases fail fairly regularly.
We replace about 4 per year.
Check the switch by taking a small screwdriver (Called a tweaker.) and touch it between the two pins that connect to the switch on the front of the case.
What this does, is simulate you pushing the button on the front of the PC, to turn it on. (When you push the button it connects the two wires together temporarily.)
If the PC turns on, the switch is bad.
If not, the motherboard is cracked.
The sinal goes from the wires, through the motherboard, to the power plug , to the power supply.
If the connection in the motherboard is bad, there are usually other problems with the board, also.

Hi,
I can’t help but wonder if this is a new machine you just assembled. Or was it at one time a running machine? If the machine has a P4 chip it may also have a 4 pin connector on the mainboard for processor power and the power supply must also have a 4 pin connector as well
if the mainboard has the 4 pin connector it must
be connected to the power supply for processor power. The 4 pin connector I am refering to is square, the same color as the main power connector and located near the center of the mainboard on the intel boards. Not knowing the specs on the machine makes it difficult to help. I hope this is of some help to you, And maybe post some specs ok.
Regards, Gil -

Take a multimeter and see if you have any voltage on the power leads.

Troubleshooting no power situations has to be one of the easiest things to do. You only have to do it in an orderly fashion and keep track of your steps. Two elementry things I did not see mentioned, you should confirm them for us… 1) does the power supply fan come on? 2)If not, did you try replacing the A/C cord that plugs into the power supply? Oh also, Is the voltage selector switch on the PSU (power supply unit) set for 117 volts (if it has one of those, some units are AUTO. May also say 110 or 115V)
In newer pc’s the push button sends a 5-volt signal to the PSU to tell it when to turn on. The power supply has a circuit that supplies 5 volts, called VSB for “standby voltage” even when it is officially “off”, so that the button will work, it’s on all the time, so long as the unit is plugged in. I do not know how the supply was checked but we have to assume they were competent and that 5 volts is there. No VSB, no switching on! Try this. Disconnect all drives from power, and remove all boards, including memory and video board. Plug monitor into integrated video or not. All we want to see is if the unit receives power, it should generate all kinds of beeps and errors. If that happens we no that something you disconnected is causing the pc not to power up. Add each item back one at a time, restarting each time, until the PC again fails to PWR UP and that last item is your problem. Lets see what happens then it’s on to the next step.-

If you are serious about troubleshooting problems like these, invest in a small cheap multimeter. continuity testing would help us alot here!

I had a situation on my computer and done everything you did with no luck. So I put it back together the way it was, but I then took the cmos battery out and it started right up and reset the bios put the battery back in and no problems since. Why It seems I was diong the Bios and before finishing I turned the power off. I must have crossed something.
