no sound after installing Win2k Pro!

By fathom ·
After installing Win2K Pro on my computer I lost sound completely. Same result with both a clean install and upgrade. I have sound with win Me but lose it with 2k pro. I did get the message that "Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter" was not found as well as "Microsoft Kernel DRM Descrambler Filter" toward the end of the installation. Within the device manager, I have a conflict with "Microsoft Kernel System Renderer" under Sound, video and game controllers. I also have a conflict with "PCI Device" under Other devices. I have tried installing win2k sound drivers to no avail. My system is a Gateway PIII 900Mhz. Anyone have the same problem before? I appreciate your help.

Aaron

Try manually loading the software drivers using the Add New Hardware Wizard using choice to select Manufacturer from list, then click on Have Disk after selection
The PCI would be in reference to Modem drivers that need to be installed from your software disk,in the same manner as above, also check the amnufacturers web site for updated drivers

I've tried to manually load the drivers using Hardware Wiz. Didn't do any good. Same problem. My modem works; the only thing else it could be is the sound card. I also went to the manufacturer of the sound card (creative) and downloaded + installed the new driver....nothing.

If this is a PCI sound card that would indicate why you have errors in sound and PCI area in Device Manager. If you know what sound card is in the PC, go to Gateway get the driver from the downlosd section and dowload/extract it to your local drive. In device manager uninstall all sound codecs, and any PCI unknown devices. Reboot. When Windows detects new hardware it will ask you to point it to the right driver/s. Direct it to the extracted Gateway files. Some of the better written sound drivers will actually self install when you extract them from Manufacturer. If that is the case for your Model Gateway, you will be able to skip the above steps, and only have to reboot after extracting the Gatewat download. Either way one of these should solve problem. If not try them and reply back.

Dell might not help.
Open your box, and figure out WHAT PCI soundcard is installed. Go to the manufacturer's website to find the right W2KPro driver, DELL may not support Win2K Pro for your system and therefore their drivers may not work. It may be an issue with the BIOS not supportnig Win2KPro also, I've upgraded Dells with ME to Win2K nefoer and Dell didn't support 2K with their BIOS updates. I found the right ones at the MOBO manufacturer's site.

FIRST: Remove the card and reboot to check for errors, if no conflicts or errors are found, download the correct W2K driver and extract it to a local folder on your C drive, replace the card and reboot. When the card is discovered (probably as an 'unknown PCI device')select HAVE DISK and point to the file where you extracted the contents. If it is unable to read the files, open the folder and there should be an exe file. Run the exe, it will discover and install the card.

Check SYSTEM properties, if you have a sound card installed and still have an Unknown device, it has been double installed, just remove the Unknown device and reboot.

Still have problems, post back.

I removed everything from the "sound etc." in device manager. I removed the sound card. After installing the soundcard I used the w2k driver installer that I downloaded from Gateway. Still nothing. It still has a conflict within device manager. still no sound Icon in the tray next to the clock.
