If you have the motherboard CD, run the sound card install program.

Or, extract the driver files from the download from the motherboard mfgs web site, and check for a setup or install .exe file and run it.

Otherwise, extract the files from thedownload, or copy the drivers from the CD onto the hard drive into a folder that is easy to find.
C:\Drivers\Sound

Delete the Multi-Media device from device manager.

Re-boot, when Windows finds the device, direct the driver wizzard to use thefiles you stored on the drive.

You cannot use "update drivers" from the device properties. The files must be un-packed from the CD first to work correctly. After that and a reboot the drivers will be automatically installed. You need to run the setup from the mother board CD. If enabled the CD should auto start select driver installation from the buttons. Make sure to select the correct model from the list. After that you'll be given a list of drivers to install. If you didn't do the chipset install that first. Anyway selectthe driver and OS the files will be unpacked and then you'll be prompted to reboot. After the computer reboots the drivers will be loaded automatically. If you haven't done so do the rest of the drivers. Each time you install a driver and reboot theprocess needs to be started again to install the next.

Hmmm... check your BIOS also and make sure the configuration is right there.

I agree with checking the bios. Also check for a jumper on the motherboard that disables the on-board sound.
