Norton SpeedDisk problems

By hartwith ·
Win98 system. When running Norton SpeedDisk the system hangs completely...no error messages and requires reboot. This problem has recently introduced itself on this system. If Windows "defrag" is used instead this will run up to app 30% and then hang in exactly the same way. The system is otherwise running ok.
Any ideas?

Do a scandisk with fix and check the entire hdd. You may have bad sectors on thge hdd developing. You may also want to do a complete backup before doing much else.

Reboot the machine, upon restart press and hold Ctrl key until you get the Windows boot menu>Choose "Safe Mode". Alternate method; Start>Run>type; msconfig>Enter. When the window opens, click ADVANCED, check the "Enable Startup menu box. Then click Apply, and allow the reboot called for...It should reboot into Safe Mode.

In safe mode; Click Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. Run the cleanup tool, getting rid of all temp files and the rest of the trash.

Now run both a normal standard & a thorough scandisk after that, then launch the Norton SystemWorks Program and Run WinDr.(repair any problems it finds), then Disk DR. (fix any problems also), then launch the Speed Disk program, check the box to "optomize the registry"...This will require a restart, and will complete the operation before loading any startup programs you might have interfering w/ the completion of the Norton Speed Disk operation.

Are you sure you have both enough RAM and enough free disk space left to allow the moving of files around? If you have less than 90MB-1GB of free space that might cause the hang you are facing. If so, delete a couple of less used but easily recovered applications (that you have CD's of or downloaded utilities that may need updating anyway) to allow more space or do some spring cleaning in the My Documents folder.

Do you have possibly Roxio Go Back installed? If so, reduce the amount of space reserved for the backup snapshots or reduce the reserved space temporarily for the Recycle Bin.

Most hangs of this type are either caused by running programs or not enough space avail.
Do not use both Defrag & Speed Disk as they accomplish the same thing in very different ways (use one or the other all the time).

Good Luck.
