    Nothing in Event Viewer

    Locked

    by jlbpotter ·

I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server that is a Domain Controlller. When I use Event Viewer I don not see any events recorded in any of the logs. Every log shows 0 events. I have checked the setting to “View all Records” and everything else that I can think of to no avail. It is very hard to troubleshoot issues when your event viewer doesn’t work. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check the properties of each Event log and make sure you have the correct sizes and everything.
Also click on the Filter tab and make sure all types of events are enabled.

Be sure the Event Log service is started; and that your event logs are set to an appropriate size (i.e., probably at least 1MB for each log file).

If you see a number of events listed at the top – which I have seen happen sometimes – but no individual items listed, try restarting the Event Log service. I have even actually had to occasionally reboot a server to get the event logs to display. I’ve never figured out why this happens but it’s so random and infrequent that I’ve never spent a lot of time on it. The individual events are always there after a reboot, it’s just that the log won’t display in the GUI…go figure.

      Hope this helps!

in active directory users and computers open ope your group policy. under “windows settings” there are “security settings” under that is “local policies” and finally “audit policy” under there are a list of things that get placed into event logs. check their settings.

      Hi there

Answer 2 is the most likely one. I have had this happen on many occassions, where the event viewer appears blank, but the events are actually there. It appears to be some kind of bug, and even after a re-boot I still had the problem, and then a few days later, it just went away and everything appeared fine. However, I could still see the number of events in the title bar, so I knew I had not lost them.

I had this problem on a second server, and after a few re-boots, everthing displayed ok.
