NT 4 and SoundBlaster Live!

By tedB ·
I have been having problems getting Windows NT working on my home system. I can get NT installed, install SP4, then my Voodoo3 3000 drivers but when I install my SB Live! (either via the Multimedia CP or the setup on the cd) my system will boot and then hang just prior to the Logon prompt. I have reinstalled NT several times, even adding my SB drivers in first but as soon as I install SP4 the system hangs on the reboot (just prior to Logon). My system hardware: IWILL motherboard (VIA Apollo Pro Chipset), PIII650, 128mb, Voodoo3 3000,SB Live! Value,3COM ethernet.
I also run Win98 and Win2000 on this system with no problems. All OS's are on different drives and I have tried NT on known good drives with the same results.
I have tried this Dual booting with 98 and then picked up the Mobile Rack to try NT alone. Same results. Installation of sofware in in these ways:
NT->SP4->Voodoo drivers->SB drivers
NT->SB drivers->Voodoo drivers->sp4
NT->IWILL motherboarddrivers->voodoo->SP4->SB

All fail and are not recoverable forcing me to format and start all over. I'm tired of installing NT...any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks...Ted

I have a quick suggestion. Go into your Bios and find out if Plug N Play is enabled. If plug N Play is enabled, it might be affecting your NT. You mentioned running a dual-boot system. I think Win/98 see's your device as plug n play. Thereby making your Bios put plug n play. When you boot to NT then something goes wrong. Remember, NT is not a plug N play OS. My suggestion to you is to make a sacrifice on what you want. Either you want NT or 98. In this situation it seams you can't have both.Good luck.

Interrupts and DMA channels may be the cuplrit here. Make certain that the interrupt you choose (it can be forced in most BIOSes) does not conflict with anything else. Failing this, set your boot.ini file so that the system displays the drivers asthey load. This way you can see exactly where it is hanging. Also check the website to ensure there are no updates or known problems with NT4 and this driver.

The answer about NT not being PnP is good!

Also, SP4 was a very dangerous thing--I'd go to SP5. That was also weird in that for some things, it helped to skip SP4, so backing SP4 out, ensuring (reinstalling?) SP3, then installing SP5 should help.

LiveWare 2 and 3 with my SBLive have worked well for me with NT4 and SP5 through 6a.

The Voodoo card has issues with some sound cards in some circumstances. Make sure that you are using the most current drivers available.

This isn't an answer, but...

If Windows2000 runs fine, why are you so insistent on running NT Workstation? NT is notorious for causing problems with advanced video and sound cards - it was designed as a business O.S. and just doesn't have the driver support of either Win98 or Windows2000.

But if you MUST run NT, at least go to SP5.
