NT 4 Server using Novell Printers

By ccs ·
Our LAN is comprised of a few NT 4 servers and Novell 3.2 servers. One Novell server hosts all the print servers/queues.

It is very common to add a network printer successfully to a Win98 or WinNT Workstation client by using the ADD PRINTER wizard.

The problem is we have a NT 4.0 server that needs one of the Novell Printers installed but when I go through the normal ADD PRINTER procedure, the wizard craps out before the printer is installed. No error message or anything, it simply returns to the "server selection" screen. I've tried re-booting the server but the same thing happens. My account has administrative rights on both the NT and Novell Servers and I can view the contents of the novell server in Network Neighborhood.

This is the first time I've needed to install a Novell printer on an NT server. Am I missing something really basic here?

Thanks!

I just did this on my PDC and had no problem establishing a printer except to load the drivers for it :-)
Do you have Gataeway Services for Netware (GSNW) installed? The gateway account must be in the NTGateway group on the NetWare server.

If your network is also using TCP/IP and the printer has an IP address associated with it (most network adapters for printers that support IPX also support IP) you can setup an LPR connection to the printer to print.

The first thing you must do is install Microsoft's NWLink protocol on the NT server (this is Microsoft's version of IPX/SPX).

There are several things that you must do next:
1) On the Novell server that has the printing pool, create a group account called NTGATEWAY.
2) Create a User account on the Novell for the administrator's account on NT (since this is more than likely [not to mention the recomended] way that you log into the server). Set this accounts permissions based on the Supervisor accounts permission.
3)Add the newly created administrator account to the NTGateway group.

Next, on the NT server, you need to click on the start button>settings>control panels> network applet. Under the services tab, you must have Gateway (and client) services for Netware installed. If it is not installed you need to click the add button and add this service.

Once the service is installed, click on close. NT will review and store all the neccessary bindings and then ask you to restart the server.

Because of the word limit, the rest of the solution got cut off.

After the server restarts and you login to the NT network, a NetWare login box will appear. This box will give you serveral options;
1) designating a preferred server
2) designating a default tree and context
3) running a NetWare login script.
Supply the need information, and if the NT administration account and NTGATEWAY account was setup correctly in Novell you will seamlessly login.

Once you are logged in, click on the start button>settings>printers. Click the add printer icon. Select networked print server and then select NetWare or Compatible Network, the print server and the printer you want to use.

You are now set up to print from NT to Novell.
