NT 4.0 Server - Drive Issues ....

By Paul_1 ·
Hi All

I wonder if anyone can assist me with a problem I am having with installing NT 4.0 Server.

I have a home built system (it uses all the approved NT products). The system config is a AMD 400 Mhz, 128 Mb of RAM, 1 x 4.3 & 1 x 6.4 Gb IDE hard drives. I have NT 4.0 Server installed on the 4.3 Gb hard drive.

If I attempt to create any partitions on the 6.4 Gb hard drive it only sees the hard drive as being 2.1 Gb in size.

I have tried a few cheats , eg installing the updated ATAPI drivers from SP4 but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for you help!!!

Are you using old fat16? That only accepts partitions up to sizes of 2GB. Try using ntfs to partition your disks, the you should also see bigger partitions.

Do you use Disk Administrator? The only way to create a partition larger than 2.1Gb under Windows NT is to use DA for partitioning the disk. The type of file system doesn't matter. (DA -> Partition -> Create)

If you don't use NTFS you will not see over 2.1 GB because that is a limitation of FAT. Are you trying to dual - os. Might need to do a 2.1 boot then and have application on a seperate logical drive.

If your trying to use this hard drive with another OS (ie W9x) then you will need to have the primary fat16 and not fat32 because WinNT will not see fat32. That is the only way that both will reside on the same computer. If your using WinNT on the whole computer then I would put the partition as NTFS, which will allow you to use a larger partition size than Fat16. Fat16 has it's limitations to just above 2gb. And WinNT again won't use Fat32. So, when installing WinNT it will prompt you to format it as NTFS. Do so if you wish to have a single drive. Otherwise after installation you can go into Administrator Tools\Disk Administrator and convert and combine it later if need be.
