You didn't mention whether this is a Domain controller or not, assuming that it is makes the repair a little more difficult. Also, you must not have the ERD either. One question though, is the Domain Admins group a member of the Administrators group on the server in question? If so, problem solved, as it is a member of that group by default when setting up domain servers. If none of the above info was helpful you will have to do a repair, effectively stripping the SAM database out of the server. If this is not your PDC you should not have to much trouble getting it back up to speed once you redo the password information. So assuming that this is not the PDC, all you will need is your NT 4.0 server CD. Boot to the install screen and press "R". It will ask you if have your ERD, if not, it will attempt to locate the Restore information from the C:\winnt\system32\config directory, provided that you have ran Rdisk before. So from there it will ask you which registry settings you want to inspect, then

There is a simple way to change the administrator password if you have your guest account enabled and have the right to log on locally. If you can login to your server console with any user, and that you have not apply any post fix after SP4, then you can download this little utility called "GetAdmin.exe" and run it. This program will change your currently login user to have Administrator priv. Then you can go to user manager for domain and change your administrator's password.

GetAdmin will work but remember to disable any anti virus software before running it.

We have used a utility that allows one to recover the password on an NT macine. It is available from Winternals. You can read more about it at http://www.winternals.com/products/#ntlocksmith. It requires that you also purchase another utility called NTRecover.

It can be a handy utility to have. Of course you must be able to physically access the machine in question to use it.

Linux boot disk to change admin password to whatever you want. Only thing is, won't work if you ran SysKey.exe on system (encrypt SAM).
