NT Backup of Exchange 5.5

By azizhakim ·
Good day, peers.I am studying backup routines in NT 4.0.I am aware of NT not backing open databases in Exchange ,priv.edb,pub.edb although the literature i am reading states ntbackup can be used for online backups i have noticed skipped files in my log.I have scripted my backup to run @ specified schedule both normal & diff.I was reading a
question on this site about stopping my service in my script & running the backup which I tried to emulate but ALTHOUGH IT IS A VERY ELEMANTARY QUESTION I donot know which command for exchange to stop.net help services does not inform me of messaging services.I have tries net stop IS,DS,but no success.Any help would be appreciated. With Veritas Exec 8.6 backup is relatively efficient.Thanx

Run Regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
The names of the listed folders are the commands you would use to start and stop services. For example, to stop a DHCP server so that you can back up its database, the command would be:
NET STOP DHCPSERVER /y
Notice that there is a folder with the same name under "services" in the registry.
For Exchange, the batch file would contain the following commands (the order of these commands is relevant):
NET STOP MSEXCHANGEMTA /y
NET STOP MSEXCHANGEIS /y
NET STOP MSEXCHANGEDS /y
NET STOP MSEXCHANGESA /y
NET STOP MSEXCHANGEES /y

To restart the services, use the NET START command, and list the services in reverse order.

I have emailed you separately with two batch files attached that I have used to do this. However, you might want to look into the Backup Exec Agent for Exchange from Veritas. This works with the basic Backup Exec system to allow it to backup Exchange while it is on-line, so you don't have to stop the services. It's a little bit pricey, but it works very well and allows you not only to backup the priv.edb and pub.edb but also to backup (and therefore restore) individual mailboxes. On-line backups are also the preferred backup method for Exchange according to Microsoft. Hope this helps!
