NT Login issue

By dcoyle ·
NT4 box. I am domain admin. Get login error after I put my password in:

"The system could not log you on to this domain because the system's computer account in it's primary domain is missing or the password is incorrect"

Nothing wrong with mypassword. Tested it on other PC's, with same domain. PC sees the ntwork (can ping stuff - while logged in as local administrator.
Anyone seen this before? Is the TCP/IP messed up?
The PC was an older one, and may have been added to another domain, in olden times...but this doesn't make sense, as I re-installed the NIC, new IP's, etc...

Any help appreciated...

Hi,

Are you sure its a member of the right domain now?

Unless its actually a member the correct domain, you can re-install all the new nics you want but it wont attempt to authenticate against that domain...

Cheers,
Tim.

Try deleting the NT4 box account from the domain controler, and then rejoin it the domain again. See if that fixes the problem. Good-lucky!

The key here is the system's computer account. Open Server Manager on the PDC and make sure the pc's computer name is there. The computer needs to join the domain. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the computer name to replicate depending one which machines on the network are master browsers, etc.

The computer account was deleted from the domain. I have run into this problem before. My fix is to login locally with the local admin account and remove the computer from the domain by placing it into a workgroup. Workgroup name does not matter. The workgroup doesn't even need to exist. Reboot. Login locally with the local admin account again and add the computer back to the domain ( you might have to use an account that will let you add computers to the domain). Reboot. Your domain admin account should work now.

Your da man. That's exactly what I suspected...but was hoping for an easier way! Either way, it works. It helps also to have the PC on the Server/bdc.

If there is nothing wrong with your password, the problem is with the computer account in the security database. You may now go to the "Identification" tab of the network properties and press the button "change", then change the "Member of" box from "Domain" to "workgroup" and press "OK". Then do the same but this time from "Domain to Workgroup" and recreate the computer account in the security database by supplying the Administrators username and password.
