NT/Office Apps opening PAINFULLY slow!

By chiligold ·
Hi everyone:
My question concerns Office 97 apps and NT4.0. Sporadically, a user will call to say their Word App or Excel App is opening
PAINFULLY slow. It really is painfully slow, normally when this call comes in, the user has had the app opening for 5 minutes.
We have tried putting the Service pack on NT, deleteing the user's profiles, and reloading Office, only to have this happen again to the same user after about two or three weeks. We called Microsoft, they have not heard of this problem before and suggested running a parellel system, which we already do, (every machine in the office building). So weare out of

You didn't mention if the Word app eventually succeeds in opening. I assume it does?

This could be caused by an indexing program running in the background, or perhaps an antivirus scanner checking the disk (or even RDISK saving the configurationinfo). I've even seen a DOS program cause this....the NTVDM goes compute intensive.

Try looking at the process tab in the task manager (Right click on task bar and select task manager). Then click on the "CPU" column header once (or twice) to sort by the most CPU intensive processes. This may give you a clue as to what is holding things up.

Good luck,
Jerry

Hi,

You must "disable link file tracking" on users profile, via NT Policy

You didn't say how many users or how large the hard drive is, but I had the same problem that you got. Tried everything I could think of, then I read an article about diskeeper speeding up another agency system performance. So I tried that too, very little help.

Called Symantec, got a free NFR (not for resale, meaning no support) copy of speedisk for NT, it performed better than diskeeper, but I still had the same problem.

If you have a spare (freshly formated) hard drive, install your apps on it and try that.
As you know windows reads a program into memory when opened, then writes it back to the first available space on the drive when you close it. This can create fragmented files, space, sectors or ghost images on the drive, which decreases the drive performance.

Worst case format the application drive, then reinstall your apps. It worked for me.

You can also go to the startup directory and delete the ofice startup and fastfind shortcuts. Both slow the pc down. Does the user have the files on a network drive? maybe there is a problem with the network or the file location. Good Luck!
