Nt Server disappears from browse list

By kma11 ·
I have an NT 4.0 server, SP6A. Every night within an hour after beginning the backup, and sometimes during the day, the server becomes unresponsive. Can't see in browse list or ping it. Get "event id 8021" in system log, "browser unable to retrieve list of servers from master". Then get "event id 8003", "master browser received server announcement from computer XXX that believes it is the master browser". Computer XXX is my PDC. Server is not multihomed and is on same subnet as other servers. Please help! I'm out of ideas, and so apparently is Microsoft.

Check and make sure that you have a WINS address in both fields. I had a simular situation where NT 4.0 using WINS the server did not have both field filled out...would cause this problem....

Good Luck!

Please check the cabling (Cables, NIC, etc..)
It could be due to some loose in the cables, so try to change.
Check the NIC, mabe it could be also the problem...
Hope this could help

Just a suggestion, check the back up software website for patches and problems of this type. It sounds like the back up might be locking up some system files, and not releasing the locks.

Good luck.
