NT Server- Hard Drive Thrashing

By nettech ·
I walked into a new office and they informed me that 3 weeks ago thier NT Server sounds like the hard drive just keeps spinning. There doesn't seem to be anything on it. They are only sharing a 1mb database. This server was used 2 years ago and then retired to a workstation. I want to optimize it again and use it for much more but am unsure where to start. They are 2 hours away so I am trying to research where to start before I go there. Any ideas?

NT Server- Hard Drive Thrashing

The drive may not be set to spin down. As the hours increas the bearings wear and is likely what is producing the spinning sound. If this is the case I would seriously reconsider whether using this drive is worth it since continuous usage wears the drive....you may want to invest in a new one. As for system optimization I would have to know more about what you are doing and the environment.

Thanks Bill but it seems that the problem was about 30,000 tmp files. Once I cleaned them out- it stopped. The drive was almost full and didn't have enough paging space, etc...

At the risk of sounding simplistic, has this underused PC ever been maintained at all? Maybe you should start by pulling the database (at 1 meg you can put it on a floppy, and back it to another), reformatting and reinstalling WinNT, Workstation or Server. That's where I would start. Then, download the hard drive's maker diagnostic utility, run it, and decide if a new hard drive is the way to go.
