NT Server Installation - PT 2

By lylea42 ·
OK I understand now that the startup disks will partition the harddrive for me but I thought NT would not recognize a hard drive partition over 4 gigs. If I make the partition say 2 gig for server and after the install use disk administrator to partition the rest of the hard drive will it show the entire drive.

NT Server Installation - PT 2

Hi, nt will not recognize a partition greater than 4gb as its system partition (boot files)when setting up from disks. The operating system always installs on fat (even if you tell it ntfs, it still loads as fat and then converts when you restart). After the install you can set up other paritions (or use the utility partition magic by powerquest; a detailed description of the product is located at www.powerquest.com). Hope this helps.

To answer your question, NT will not recognize a system partition over 4gigs but there is no practical limit on how big the other partitions can be (provided you use NTFS).

For example, my main server here has a 2gig system partition and the other 18gig is organized as a single NTFS partition.

After you get your system partition up and running, you'll just go into Disk Administrator, highlight the unused drive space and click Partition, then Create Partition, commit the changes, format the partition, assign a drive letter and you're good to go with the full capacity of the drive.

regards!

The first answer is correct. NT still uses fat to create system partition therefore 4 gb limitation. If you need larger system partition you can install this drive as secondary into another NT box and create a partition up to 8 Gb.
