Nt 4 sp5 Domain enviroment: server & wrkst wan
Hp vectra vei8 450 mhz, 128 mg ram, HP Deskjet 970 cxi installed local LPT1 Prn cable NEW EVERYTHING!
IBM Personal Communications (termainal emul)
WordPerfect 9
Netscape 4.7 plus other misc software pieces....

Built an replacement machine for a phase2 rollout. Tested this box thorougly for 3 weeks, ran great ;printed great! Everthing the balls!
Used it as a clone and am building 600 pcs with it. Using newsid after renaming the wrkst (incase we create workgroups in the future, doubtful).
Now after a month my first 11 remote sites are calling in saying they can't print. Helpdesk discovers no printer icons in printer applet. Spooler's down after a possible 3 print jobs into the day. Users don't have right to start it, even if they did, I don't think it would start. A reboot is needed. Then missing print jobs com out of the printer! This makes for a long b-day.
HP has stated "they do not support terminal emulation" yet failed to tell us

Check your server for the swap file dimmensions (in Control\Panel\System Performance Page.
You should have at least 15% more than your RAM amount (128 probably you should have 150MB of pagefile minimum, for heavy printing even more).
In the samepage you have a "Boost" thing... Put it in the middle(to give some time for spooling...)
Make sure that you have enough free space on your system disk. (the spooler needs a place where to keep the image of your printing jobs).
If you use terminalserver on that machine you might also move the printer to other machine because that thing EAT YOU ALIVE. Because for every client that you have Terminal services allocates a small NT Kernel (RAM and also some other resources, 8 clients is YOUR RAM limit) and if you cannot limit the number of users you have to keep that machine stripped and put all the other resources on other machines.

my 2c worth
There are known issues with the 870cxi drivers supplied by HP, they may apply to the 970cxi drivers as well. Technet Q197383 describes the situation, but you do not mention event id's. Would be interested to know if this works for the 970

we have ran into this problem, sometimes NT will ""get lost" and use multiple logons for each user. This is really apparent when using systems that are loging into a domain controller, that have had the users made onto the local machine also. One remady we use is to remove all local logons except the Administrator so we can do on site maintance.
we also encourage all end users to leave the system up and running all the time, and lock it down when not in use. But if you lose your printers, ihave only found that a reboot is needed to get them back.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, I don't have domain issues, userids or connectivity issues. No local id's are on the workstation.
No error in event viewer relating to the DrWats. errors. Printers just gone and/or the DrWats.
Here's a little more wierdness. Some days they work all day long, no problems. Some days it's like ****!
I feel my next job might be a Denny's!!
