I need help. I have a user who has been installing Aimster software ( file sharing program to download music from the Internet) on his machine and the software always messes up the machine and we always have to format his hard drive. This has happened twice. Now I want to make it impossible for him to install anything on his machine. I have installed NT Workstation on the machine. Is there something I can do to the machine to make it impossible to install anything on the machine without having administrative rights? Registry tweaks, script, or any trick.

I use a program called WinGuides Tweak Manager that can be found at;
www.winguides.com

This program gives you control of just about anything on any Windows platform. You can disable the ability of users to install software, deny access to registry editing tools, etc. You can download their free demo which works great but for full capability you will need to buy the appropriate licensed package (single license is about $30). I have used this on Win 9x, ME, NT, 2000, and XP and I have not had any problems with the OS being corrupted.

If you make the person just a USER instead of power user or admin that should take care of it. You could also try using GPEDIT.msc its a group policy editor that allows all kinds of controls to be set or released for that matter. At the run prompt on the start menu, you should be able to type in gpedit.msc(hit ok) and get to the info im talking about. If your not used to this kind of thing be carefull not to set something you are unsure of. Try and make changes to the user and not system wide. Its been awhile since ive used NT4 so i dont rem. all the options here. Browse around and you should find something that will work. Just trying to give an alternative that should already be included. It may be necessary to intall the tool(microsoft management console=MMC) from NT CD.

Hope this helps give you an option

You simply make him a user, not administrator. If he needs a few more rights, put him in the power user group - still can't install apps as a power user. Also, try free tweakui - available at the microsoft site under the powertoys - just search the microsoft site. It really let's you control a lot of the user interface. Good luck!

Just go to your NT server ( PDC or BDC then copy over to PDC ) and use the Policy editor tool in the Admin tools.
You will need to point to the Pol file which should be in c:\windows\system32\repl\import\scripts?
create a new users there and use his logon name.
There you stop him from doing anything.
You can stop him from messing with his desktop or loading stuff.
Brill.

I don't have login scripts in place so user profiles don't work on my network.

If I were you I would confront the person's superviser. If they have time to download music they are not getting much work done. If you explain it in a lost productivity angle it will do the trick. hjs
