NT won't reconize SCSI devices

By mcdcorp ·
Win98 (second edition)Fat16 reconizes all the devices currently installed. But after installing NT4.0 build 1381 on partitioned drive "d" as a duel boot, NT wont reconize the scsi devices. But does in win98.
Motherboard = ASUS p2L97-DS, 440LX, duel PII(266intel),128mg ram, adaptec 7880 chipset duel SCSI ultra-fast/wide "onboard",concurrent PCI.
Harddrives= WD 3.2(ide) "C",fireball ST (scsi),fireball ste (scsi).
zip drive (scsi), toshiba CD ROM (scsi). ricoh (CD-RW IDE).

can anyone help me get NT to see these SCSI devices?

I would suggest checking for the latest BIOS updates from www.asus.com for that mother board. Then apply SP5.

I aggree with #2. You need at least SP4. Plus make sure that you terminate the last drive.

You did not state if NT recognized ANY of the devices. If it recognizes NONE of the devices, NT probably doesn't recognize the SCSI controller, which you must solve first. If NT recognizes the SCSI hard disk, then the controller is working and it should see the Toshiba CD Rom. The zip drive and cd-rw require specific scsi drivers from the mfg's. Check with the mfg. for these and see the Win NT Hardware Compatability List. Currently NT does not support nearly as many devices as Win 98 does. I don't think the BIOS or Service Packs have much bearing here, since the BIOS is only used during "bootup" and NT takes over once booted. i.e. INT13 no longer used. Of course you should go to SP5 once everything is working for all the bug fixes and Y2K fixes in that SP.

Working under the assumption that there are good NT drivers for these devices. If you examine the NT opertaing system installation/setup, the HAL tries to autodetect all recognizable devices by loading the drivers into RAM and waits for a positive response from the device, this is how NT determines what drivers to install in the autodetect process. The only problem with that is some devices will return a positive response although the device will not fully support the drivers implementation. The fix for this is that during the installation to press the F6 key as soon as the words NT SETUP appear, this forces NT not to detect storage devices and will allow you to use the OEM setup disks to load the appropriate drivers.

Hope this helps
