    NT won’t reconize SCSI devices

    Locked

    by mcdcorp ·

    Win98 (second edition)Fat16 reconizes all the devices currently installed. But after installing NT4.0 build 1381 on partitioned drive “d” as a duel boot, NT wont reconize the scsi devices. But does in win98.
    Motherboard = ASUS p2L97-DS, 440LX, duel PII(266intel),128mg ram, adaptec 7880 chipset duel SCSI ultra-fast/wide “onboard”,concurrent PCI.
    Harddrives= WD 3.2(ide) “C”,fireball ST (scsi),fireball ste (scsi).
    zip drive (scsi), toshiba CD ROM (scsi). ricoh (CD-RW IDE).

    can anyone help me get NT to see these SCSI devices?

      I would suggest checking for the latest BIOS updates from http://www.asus.com for that mother board. Then apply SP5.

      I aggree with #2. You need at least SP4. Plus make sure that you terminate the last drive.

      You did not state if NT recognized ANY of the devices. If it recognizes NONE of the devices, NT probably doesn’t recognize the SCSI controller, which you must solve first. If NT recognizes the SCSI hard disk, then the controller is working and it should see the Toshiba CD Rom. The zip drive and cd-rw require specific scsi drivers from the mfg’s. Check with the mfg. for these and see the Win NT Hardware Compatability List. Currently NT does not support nearly as many devices as Win 98 does. I don’t think the BIOS or Service Packs have much bearing here, since the BIOS is only used during “bootup” and NT takes over once booted. i.e. INT13 no longer used. Of course you should go to SP5 once everything is working for all the bug fixes and Y2K fixes in that SP.

      Working under the assumption that there are good NT drivers for these devices. If you examine the NT opertaing system installation/setup, the HAL tries to autodetect all recognizable devices by loading the drivers into RAM and waits for a positive response from the device, this is how NT determines what drivers to install in the autodetect process. The only problem with that is some devices will return a positive response although the device will not fully support the drivers implementation. The fix for this is that during the installation to press the F6 key as soon as the words NT SETUP appear, this forces NT not to detect storage devices and will allow you to use the OEM setup disks to load the appropriate drivers.

      Hope this helps

      Download the IomegaWare Program, make sure that cables are attached properly, power to the drive and if it is a Plus or a 250 make sure it is turned on. run setup, when prompted to add the SCSI driver, select Iomega’s SCSI driver and add it to your SCSI devices. You will be prompted to use “current” or “new”, Select “NEW”. You must reboot. A good tip: if you see that the device is added to your SCSI devices before you reboot, it probably will not work. Remove Iomega SCSI device reboot and repeat process. If this process never seems to work you may have a missing or corrupt SCSI.inf file. Location: %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\SCSI.inf If this is the case launch Command prompt, Type “del/f/q%SystemRoot%\inf\Scsi.inf” , (Press Enter) Type: “Expand:\I386\SCSI.in_ %SystemRoot%\inf\SCSI.inf” (Where is your drive letter that NT CD-ROM is located) (Do not type the Quotation Marks)

      Try to create tree NT boot disk, then boot with it and when NT ask you for additional storage devices (after it find your drive C) click “yes” and insert your driver disk with NT 4.0 drivers. NT will load SCSI drivers and intialize your devices and will continue installation from cd-rom.
      Try FreeBSD or Linux – it haven’t problems with SCSI and SMP.

      This is what you need to do:
      in NT, go to control panel ->SCSI adapters. Click on the Drivers tab and click add. Click have disk and insert the drivers disk for the SCSI controller (not the scsi devices). reboot after completing the drivers installand your devices should show up.
      The morals of this? Well, if NT is going to see your devices, it first has to see the controller they are atached to, see?

      Visit the adaptec web site and download the SCSI device drivers for NT 4.0 for your specified devices. To install access SCSI Adapters through control panel. Select the Drivers tab and add the new device drivers.
      If all goes well you should be ableto see your SCSI devices after a reboot.

      98 is all plug and play therefore 98 configures all the hardware itself.
      To get your scsi devices working you must first have:
      NT DRIVERS FOR YOUR ADAPTEC 7880
      SCSI CARD.
      They can be downloaded from http://www.adaptec.com
      Now that you have all the drivrers
      goto start/settings/control pannel
      Click on scsi adapters.Click on drivers tab and click add.
      Specify the location of your drivers and bob your uncle!

      On the other hand if you Know all that and that does not work you will have to specify your driver through nt boot disks.Load from boot disks,s to specify a scsi adapter and place your downloaded driver in the drive.
      That should do it eithre.

      #5 Hit the nail on the head. The SCSI card is rather new and not supported by the default device list in NT. Like the man said hit F6 as so as it says NT Setup when you boot off the first setup disk. It will ask you if you want to specify mass storage devices. Have the drivers ready because this is where you install them. This works get for non-supported Raid controllers too.

      If the SCSI devices are plugged into PCI slots, you may have to go into the BIOS and enable “PCI BUS Mastering”-i had all the right drivers installed and this is the only thing that worked for me.

      If you install NT using the diskeete method, then you should copy the SCSI drivers onto disk 3 and when asked to specify aditional mass storage devices point it to the files you have copied in.

      First thing to do is go to the adaptec web site and download the latest drivers and bios for your scsi card. Flash the scsi card to update the bios (not needed but is a good idea to keep up with the current). You’ll need the 78X0 family manager set v3.02which can be found at http://search.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/dirlist.pl
      the file you need is 7800WNT.EXE
      Download to an empty directory and run the self extracting file. Go to the control panel and open the SCSI Adapters icon. Click the Drivers taband thenclick the Add button. Next click the “Have Disk” button and the enter the path to the empty directory where you extracted the adaptec files into and add “\winnt\4_0” to that path and then click OK. Reboot and that should do it. HTH
