NT4 constantly accessing A: Drive

By d0c_h0l1day ·
I recently re-installed NT4 w/SP3 on my Dell GXa Desktop. Since re-installing whenever I attempt to install new software, or update existing software NT will attempt to access the Floppy Drive and then give an error (unable to find **program's exe file**) hit abort, retry, or ignore. If I stick a random floppy in the drive and hit retry it will continue to install or update the software with no problems. I am assuming it's because I installed NT4 using the three floppy disk's it creates during install. Is there a way to fix this problem so NT will stop attempting to access the floppy drive during an install or update?

The following are possible solutions to this problem:
Clear the documents menu.

Clear Unwanted Entries from the Start Menu's Run Command.

Check for any viruses on your system (some users have reported the NEUVILLE virus)

Search your hard disk for all .PIF that point to programs on a floppy drive

Take out LocalLoadHigh=1 from your MSDOS.SYS file.

Check HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID in the Registry for any references to OCX's or DLL's referenced on the floppy.

If you're using Norton Navigator:
Clear Norton Navigator's Run history (or disable the Run history all together).

If you're noticing this behavior with only a particular applications, you must clear the History List for that application.

Download the bug fixfrom ftp.symantec.com

I did try everything mentioned but it still access's the floppy drive on occasion and gives me the error Abort, Retry, or Ignore unless I stick a random floppy disk in and then it continues on as normal. I did move up to service pack 6a thinking this may of caused the problem but it didn't fix it either.

Other programs known to cause this problem:

McAfee Antivirus - try removing this program entirely, or just disbling the Access & Shutdown options in the Scan Disks On area in the Detection tab of the VShield Configuration Manager.

FirstAid -try removing this program or disabling certain features.
Long Filenames for Windows- View Software has a patch that supposedly fixes this problem.

Above all things, you need to be at least up to Service Pack 5. Service Pack 3 was so long ago,who knows what problems exist with it today. I do know that it isn't Y2K compliant. Don't bother with Service Pack 6a yet because it is still full of bugs.

Good Luck.

If you think it is the source path causing the problem, you can check the registry (and change it if it is pointing to the wrong place). The registry setting is in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Source path points to my Cd-ROM drive (E: in this case)
