NTLDR is Missing...SATA

By davids ·
Okay I am trying to load Win XP Pro and keep getting NTLDR is missing. I have tried several different Windows disks,as well as different optical drives, and have even replaced the ribbon cable a few times. I went through bios and set it up to boot from cd-rom followed by HDD. The board is an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe. The only thing I can think of is I am missing a raid setting somewhere and can't seem to find it anly help would be greatly appreciated.

Which SATA driver are you using?

by Langlier In reply to NTLDR is Missing...SATA

Most SATA drives require you to press f6 during the initial part of windows setup to load the SATA driver. make sure you are using the most current one for your motherboard (should be available on the website. put it on a floppy). also make sure you are using the correct driver for your system(you can scroll down though it only seems to show 4). Hope this helps.

Didn't work

Sorry was a no go. Using a WD 160GB HDD since replacing the HDD I know get Disk boot failure. I have not even been able to get Windows to start to load with either drive.

NTLDR

David,
Follow this link if you haven't already tried:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm
I wouldn't run fixmbr as it may convert your ntfs to fat.
Have you tried running the repair option from your windows CD?

Yeah I have

Yeah I have gone there. But unfortunate for me I can not get even the Windows CD to load anything. I immediately get one of the two errors.

Re: NTLDR is Missing

Hi david,
NTLDR is nothing to do with Sata drivers but with Windows only..I had the same motherboard and it was a pig of a board, but when it works it is fine. First (if you can) down load "secure erase", because you have some currupt files still left on your harddrive and this is what is holding you up, once you have run this bit of software you can add on you Windows software..Please get a backup of your drive when all is done so you do not have to go through this again.
Hope all goes well.

NTLDR (abbreviation of NT Loader) is the boot loader for Windows NT, including some of its later versions (2000/XP/Server 2003). NTLDR does not appear in Windows Vista, which divides the functionality of NTLDR between two new components: winload.exe and the Windows Boot Manager. NTLDR can be run from either portable storage (such as a CD-ROM or USB flash drive), or the primary hard disk. NTLDR can also load a non NT-based operating system given the appropriate boot sector in a file.

NTLDR requires, at the minimum, the following two files to be on the system volume: NTLDR, which contains the main boot loader itself, and boot.ini, which contains configuration options for a boot menu. To load an NT-based OS, ntdetect.com must also be present. (Strictly speaking, only NTLDR is actually required. If boot.ini is missing, NTLDR will default to C:\Windows on the first partition of the first hard drive. Many desktops in the home are in this configuration and a missing boot.ini file will simply generate an error stating it is missing, then boot into Windows successfully.)

The Volume Boot Record written to disk by the Windows NT format command attempts to load and to run the NTLDR program.

Solution

by davids In reply to NTLDR is Missing...SATA

Well I got the problem fixed thank you all for your advice. Fixed it with an easy solution replaced the CMOS battery and moved the jumper. Looks like the battery was failing. Hope this helps somebody in the future.
