number of login attempts causes lockout

By IT_crazy ·
I have 2 users that have laptops and dial into our parent company's server to access our domain and get email. The accounts are set for 3 login attempts and then it will lock the account if not successful. What appears to be happening is when they log out and try to log in later on, the account is locked. I have changed their login attempts to 8 and they don't have any problems. These people are on our domain, so if I change their login to 8, it changes everyone's login to 8. We want to keep login attempts to 3. One user is running Windows NT 4.0 and the other one is using Windows 98. Both are using same dial in program. Thanks for your help.

I ran into this problem with some users with NT workstations who would log in locally not the domain. They would map a driveletter to a resource and it prompts them for a username and password. Well NT caches this info and when the users changed their domain password, the autoreconnects for the network drives with now invalid credentials would lock them out. Not sure if this is what his happening but chances are the machines are using cached credentials to access something. You may wish to turn on auditing on your servers to see what resources the users are failing to access.

Check the NT knowledge base too...I saw something there the other day about some standard procedure (I think it was mapping a drive) which counts as TWO login attempts if it fails...I just don't remember exactly what it was....sorry. I do remember they had a quick fix tweak for it, though.
