Okay, l'll play the game. What's happening to TR this morning???

By sleepin'dawg ·
I open my computer do a few things like read and answer e-mails and then call up TR. Wonder of wonders, I'm already logged on but, wait for it, I can go everywhere except into forums. that will open only so far down as "Discussions" "Questions" etc. and then the page is blank until you come to the stuff one normally finds at the bottom of the page. What's happening now???

I saw this type of thing last week

by DMambo In reply to Okay, l'll play the game. ...

I used the Browse view and opened the off-topic list, but only saw 5 discussions. I was going to whine about it, but when I went to confirm the behavior, it displayed properly.

Try it again later!

BTW - glad you're back!

It's not picking on you, honestly!

This seems to happen in fits and starts; happened to me last week too.

Had a blank page for about three hours, but all of a sudden it came back!

I've no idea what starts it, but since the revamp it's happened a couple of times for no apparent reason; I know the last I heard was that Doug was trying to trace the problem, but couldn't as it was so intermittent.

It'll probably be okey dokey for a few months now - it seems to happen like that!

I've noticed strange things as well. I think. . . . .

by maxwell edison In reply to Okay, l'll play the game. ...

.....it's related to your (and my) firewall. Something's trying to get through it, and since it can't, it doesn't do anything. In my case, some pages just weren't loading, regardless of how many times I tried. I temporarily turned off my firewall, and it loaded pretty fast. I'm not suggesting we disable our firewalls, but rather TR quit trying to get through them.

Doug of CNET...

by Jaqui In reply to Okay, l'll play the game. ...

Figured that would catch your eye.
:)

I've noticed that most site problems I get happen when i.i.com.com hangs in it's response for the requested data.
if it takes longer than 5 seconds there is either missing content as Dawg is commenting about, or a complete page can't be found error.

Yes, i.i.com.com appears to be at the root of many problems.

by stress junkie In reply to Doug of CNET...

But I figured that all of the various .com.com servers are really different network "homes" on one single server so I never mentioned it.

But it is a chronic problem.

Based on performance I envision the TR network as one 8088 based computer running MS-DOS and Windows for Workgroups v3.11 with about a dozen IP addresses and using a 300 baud acoustic coupled modem to connect to the Internet. So that's what happened to my Epson XT!

Akamai servers

by RexWorld In reply to Yes, i.i.com.com appears ...

Just FYI, the i.i.com.com machines aren't actually run by CNET. Those are Akamai servers. Akamai is in essence a bandwidth-assistance service. They maintain servers across the planet which (usually) makes content delivery faster.

For example, say you're in Taiwan. When your browser tries to download an image or CSS files from i.i.com.com, instead of having to go all the way to the US it can find those files in Akamai's Taiwanese data center.

That's the theory, and usually Akamai is a good service.

Thanks

by debuggist Staff In reply to Doug of CNET...

We're looking at the servers now. We have a pretty good idea as to the cause. It's intermittent and may take a while to roll out a resolution.

This looks like a load problem rather than some software bug.

Since raising the question this AM it's now okay but..............

by sleepin'dawg In reply to Thanks

I'm curious about a chronic log in problem I'm having lately. Each and every time I log into TR it denies me entry and does not recognize my password. I re-register the password and am then granted entry. I do not have this problem with bnet.com, zdnet.com or com.com (Download.com.com) but I am encountering this problem with techrepublic.com.com.

TR and the others are listed amongst my trusted sites and all have permission but TR keeps causing problems. 'Tis a puzzlement.
