Old users cannot login.

By zlosie ·
I have just installed new workstations into a classroom running Win2000 Professional, the server is still running WinNT 4.0. The problem is users cannot login using their old accounts. New accounts that have been created on the server after the new workstations were installed can login, yet the old accounts work on the old PC's. I don't want to have to create new accounts for everyone unless absolutely necessary.

I am assuming you are running a domain, and that these are domain accounts.
We changed to 2000 with no ill effects, so it should work. What happens when you try? Also could be to do with the computer account.
Try adding a line in the lmhosts file on each PC as follows:
"ip_address server_name #PRE #DOM:domain" Substitue your server name, domain and IP of course. This will pre-load the domain controller address into memory. This fixed quite a few ills on our network early on. Also check DNS and WINS are working and setup correctly.
