On Veteran's Day, I Remember

BFilmFan
We are the eternal line against the night.

We are shield and sword for those who cannot defend themselves.

We walk in lonely places, so that others will never have the journey.

We ask for no awards or honor.

We do not have the same mother and father; but, each of you is blood of my blood, kin of my kin.

I remember you, my brothers and sisters.

I haven't. Came close once or twice, but in the end, recruiters (very good guys) thought it might not be the best path for me. I saw their points and agreed.

So I thank all of You Who Have Served.

To all those who served, whether stateside or deployed overseas, in peacetime or war, I thank you. I did my part when I could have legally fled to Canada. To the surviving family members and friends, My heart goes out to you. My father served in WWII in the PI and myself in VietNam. But we really asked for no honors just the respect that only now our current troops are recieving. I attended the WWII celebration in Wash. DC this past August and was really moved by the attitude of those surviving vets from the last world war. Hopefully there will never be another major conflict but rest assured that our young soldiers stand ready to defend the American way. Remember: All gave some, Some gave all.

I must say now that I completely missed the day due to my own life distractions.

Thanks BFilm for posting what I should have.

Just a hair too young for Viet Nam, though almost drafted for the last year and too old for the rest.

I thank your family for their service.

Veterans eat free today. Show an ID, a picture of yourself in uniform, or be in uniform.

Yeah, it requires another paid entree, but still, if you were going out tonight anyway...

Is giving a free entree...not all of them, but a good selection. They want an ID, a DD214, other formal documentation, or you can be in uniform. http://applebees.com/DispErr.html?aspxerrorpath=/vetsday/Default.aspx

Was in the neighborhood of one and going to stop by for lunch, but at 1055, the line was already wrapped around the building.

I also managed to get a picture of his grave marker. And thanks to my grand mother, the buttons from his uniform.

    Never forget.

Despite the fact that he was never in an official "war", he served for 25 years, and was wounded twice while peacekeeping. He didn't think much of peacekeeping BTW.

He served in two armies, the British Army and the Canadian. He was actually hours away from landing in Egypt for the Suez Crisis, it was a peace deal brokered by the US that stopped him. His officer's commissioning papers were a sheepskin signed by Her Magisty the Queen.

He was quite the charecter, and probably would have ended up with higher rank if he had learned a little more politics. But he always had great stories to tell. He passed away a year ago.

My uncle also served a long career as an airframe mechanic for the Canadian Air Force.

Timing wasn't right for my family for WWII or Korea, my Grandparents too old, my father/uncles too young. I do have an ancester who I am named after that died in the trenches of WWI.

My wife's grandfather died in WWII, she never met him.
