Network:
Ethernet 10/100, cat5, 3Com & netgear nics, SMC 8port Hub. Win 98 & Win 95 workgroup 5 computersComputer1 has drive that holds shared folder for Workgroup. The apps accessing shared folder on D:, Office 2000 Pro, MS Schedule+ in workgroup mode, Accounting software that uses Computer1 as server, computer2 thru 5 are clients.
Problem:
Computer1 has Word doc open, Computer2 has Word doc open, Computer3 has Publisher file open. All computers have Schedule+ running, Computer3 gets illegal operation and hangs, Computer1 & 2 hang also, can not use ctrl-alt-del Must power down all and restart to get back up and running. Computers 4&5 are not affected. This has occured intermitently but is getting more frequent. It has also occured when files are just open but idle and no Invalid page faults. Usually just Comp1 & Comp2.

Check the protocols they are using to communicate. If they are using Netbeui, remove it and configure all clients to run on IP only.

What is the precipitating Illegal operation on PC3? Computer 1 appears to lock up each time, is that correct? If so, I would consider a new NIC, or updated network drivers or at least a reinstallation of the drivers on PC1.

Would also look for a virus.

Why not NetBEUI?
PC1 locks everytime, No virus detected, can happen with any app on the system, The system has gone as long as 2 month's without locking up, that's why this is so puzzleing, not repeatable.

This seems to be related to the dll's in use by Publisher and Word. I would look to see what active processes and dll's are in use. What's probably happening is the process that crashes for publisher is corrupting the same dll's being used by the computers with other office apps open.

Another option may be related to Office 2k and its web features. It's possible that computer 3 is using computer 1 as its publishing web server. Once that hangs all MS Office apps may hang also.

But I would look at anything that computers 1-3 share since 4-5 are not using the same application sweet and are remaining unaffected.

-Disable all power saving features on Computer 1

-Reinstall apps (Publisher and Office) on Computer 1.

-Isolate the problem: Is it the apps or the network? Does this happen only when accessing an app and are you able to easily recreate the problem? Or does this happen from other processes

Power saving was the first thing I checked all disabled only password screen savers running. I have not been able to recreate, and usually their is not even an error message only the last time which I related in the question, and the user did not write down the error like I asked them.

No answer...but I do have a question. After this problem occurs, is the Word document that was open okay or does it have funky characters in it? We have a network site where Word 2000 and W98 will trash the end of a Word document and an attempt to print that document will lock Word. Alt-Ctl-Del will pull up task list and show Word 'not responding'. This problem does not affetc other PC's. Maybe this problem is related to your problem. We don't have a solution to this problem.

No ctrl-alt-del is not available - freezes completely - both Pc's alway's Pc1, which seems to be the only constant. All comes back to normal after reboot, except last time, PC3 lost it's drive mappings. All docs are Okay.

Normally, I'm the last person to suggest checking version, patches, and updates, but you say you have a mix of 95/98.

Are 1, 2&3, or 4&5 running the same version?

What are your releases for 95? a ver, SR-1, SR-2 ? 98 Second Edition?

Are all the office2000 users on the same SR?

The only specific difference you mentioned between 1,2,and 3 was that 3 runs publisher.

If I was to take a guess, the problem would clear up if 3 would move the shared file to local machine, then open it. Save it local and move it back.

The illegal op is most likely a symptom of "autosave" having trouble with file locks on the shared drive. The document itself is saved as a $temp etc, but the embedded images etc are not.
