We have a vendor who has installed a software package on our Win2K server. He wants an open port to access his software remotely. How do i set this up? Thanks

This answer will vary a great deal depending on your network environment.

First, does the corporate security policy allow outside organizations to have access to your network?

Do you have a firewall? You will need to open a port for the vendor there. Those details can vary depending on your firewall vendor.

Mroe details on your environment would assist in answering this question better.

Sure. Its a small simple network. Yes, this vendor is approved for access. Gateway is a Cayman 3500 DSL router with some firewall features. There is only one user with remote privelidges (me), this vendor will be the only other and only temporarily. Thanks

This is what I did.

I have a vendor who needs to get on to one of my server and work on it.

I set him up with a VPN account and a PC anywhere. He authenticates to log on to the VPN and then authenticates again to log on to the server using PC anywhere. Its working out good for me.
