Open Slow with server&user got internet

By kimliang ·
Hi,I'm first time to use this board, hope somebody can help me.My office got a 50pc to access my files server(DNS server).Other have 5 pc can access internet, those is windows xp professsion. My problem is when this 5 user want to save/open the files from the server it will slow.

Example 1:
The tcp/ip like this
IP : 192.168.0.186
subnet mask :255.255.255.0
Gateway :192.168.0.200 (ADSL modem router)
DNS :202.188.0.133 (ISP DNS)
DNS :202.188.1.5 (ISP DNS)

like this case, the user can access internet and open the files with server, but the problem is very slow (maximun 5min).

Example 2
The tcp/ip like this
IP :192.168.0.186
subnet mask :255.255.255.0
Gateway :192.168.0.200 (ADSL modem router)
DNS :192.168.0.1 (My Domain Server)

This kind of user can open the file very fast, but don't have internet access.

Does everyone know the solution to solve the problem.

Many thanks

For Example 1 PCs, set primary DNS to server address (like those in example 2) and set secondary DNS to router address.

See if that fixes speed problem and also allows internet access.

Can't be more specific without additional network configuration information.

To my knowledge, the local DNS server (usually domain controller also) should always be primary DNS address on all connected PCs.

in my opinion, if there is only 5 pc have access to internet, make sure all the pc have manually fixed ip. dont let the pc assign its ip automatically.

if you have software gateway set up in the server, i suggest you get a hardware version. because windows xp wont work perfectly in complex network environment.

and about the internet access, dont set up a gateway specifically for internet access, just use internet connection sharing feature since you only need 5 pc to have internet.

make sure you have those 5 pc visible in the workgroup computer. so when the save/open file is in process, the process wont be slowing down.

actually you have to be more specific and you need to have some network planned properly, so that if problem occurs you know which part should be fixed.

Presently my all office user are using fixed IP.

My office network is quite very simple, like
ISP -> ADSL Router -> Switch hub -> 50 unit pc(25unit using windows 98,5 windows 2000 server,20 user using windows xp, but 5 pc xp got internet access).

if i don't specifically gateware for internet access, the user can't access the internet and some of the file in the files server will not work (open & save).

The 5 PC visible in the workgroup.

Thanks for your suggestion, I have see throw all the network, it's not complete and unsafe, since i come before this office don't have any IT guy to handle it. Than I need to implement and re-design the office network.

Anyway really want to thanks to sharing your knowledge, but i still looking another temprory solution, after i can make a move to implement the entire network.

How I can add the 3 domain at the same time? it's
"Local Area Network->Properties->Internet protocol (TCP/IP)->Advance->DNS-> add DNS Server Address, in order to use"?

You can add more than 2 DNS servers. The first one is best to be on the local network for local net traffic.
The local DNS server should also be set to use the Gateway and the 2 ISP DNS servers.

Also make sure that the 'Workstation', 'TCP/IP NetBios Helper', and 'DNS Client' services are running.

hi w2ktechman
I tried to add another 2 dns,but the problem still remain. User cannot access the internet.

I have found this 2 thing in the "Event Report" If the user can access the internet, but access files slow.

1. Event ID :1054
Source: Userenv
Description : Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network (The specified domain either does not exsist or could not be contacted.) Group Policy processing aborted.

2.Source: AutoEnrollment
Event ID : 15
Description :Automatic certificate enrollment for DOMAIN\james failed to contact the active directory (0x8007054b). The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Enrollment will not be performed.

I've had a similar environment. Try this configuration.
On your domain controller
IP: 192.168.0.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.200
DNS1: 202.188.0.133(ISP DNS1)
DNS2: 202.188.1.5 (ISP DNS2)

On your workstations
IP: 192.168.0.x
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.200(ADSL modem router)
DNS: 192.168.0.1 (your internal domain server)

The newtowrk clients should contact your internal domain controller for both internal and external name resolutions. Your internal server can then provide non-authoritative DNS responses for external destinations. I trust this will help.
