This sounds like a virus.
You are going to have to scan the floppy first, because it is also infected.

Sounds like the HD was swapped from a system with different motherboard (different chipset).

Solution: Boot from the winXP install CD. Don't select the Repair option. Skip it and go to the step where you select the path for installation. The installation routine will pick up your existing OS and will ask you if you want to repair it. Choose repair. This will replace many of the core files and drivers to their original, generic, state which will allow you to boot. Once booted into Windows, install your drivers for the new machine.

Both are correct. However, make sure you check for viruses before you do the repair since it will just happen again if you have a boot sector virus.

Make sure that the partition with XP on it is set active. If the bios found it but fdisk didn't, that doesn't sound right. I've done what Answer 2 suggested and that should difinitely work as long as your can find the hard drive.

go into the BIOS and make sure that it is physically seeing the drive and that the drive is set as the master. If I am not seeing the drive from the BIOS, you have a bad BIOS, Bad board, bad luck :) I would piggyback the drive onto another computer as a slave and format it. But I think your issue is with the board.

I found the answer the next day.I was waiting to see if someone came up with it. after swichting hard drives to see if the bios could see other hard drives. I found that the jumpers on the hard drive were set wrong. after setting the drive as a master, I was able to use the recovery disk to load the os. since brianmann came up with the rite answer, I'm giving him the points. everyone came up with good answers. thanks allot for the help.
