Oracle and Informix

See, colleague, I've been a salesperson selling Sybase RDBMss and the like for 3+ years.
You are asking for "what's the better", in terms of implied technology, and that's a dangerous way to decide. Every vendor will say each one has the best engine. They will show you gigantic grids showing the advantages of one engine over the rest.
But the decision needs to be made at the light of the specific problem to be solved. Nowadays, engine tech is not an issue, they are all excellent. You better consider Replication reqs, integration with legacy, openness, adherence to standars, staff availability in your region, support, etc.
Have luck

Another aspect of the decision should be company viability, market share, and how it is priced for purchase and maintenance. You will find that there are a lot more Oracle Database Admins out there. You should look at tech support track records and the software you are going to run on the database. Ignore the dog and pony show by the vendor. If you are using this with ERP, MRP or some other large app you should discus it with the application vendor. Call there tech support and see what they say. It may be a different story then the sales guy. We use BaaN running on Informix. The exec's were sold on its features. Now we are planning to change to Oracle because we only store alphanumeric and the oracle is compatible with our 3D solid modeling which we someday hope to incorporate into our ERP app (drawings linked to itemmaster linked to revision numbers etc.).
