"out of system resource" error

By ja1752 ·
I have a NT 4.0 network running on twisted pair. We recently started running an aplication that uses SQL 7.0 as its backend. The front end is a program put out by Sequest Technologies called Tier. Tier is a Totally Integrated Electronic Record type program. Anyway, our base machine is a P166, 64 mgs of ram and a 6 gig hard drive with plenty of room running windows 98 with all the currents patches, etc. The Sql server machine is a PIII with 256 mgs of ram and a 10 gig hard drive. It's a member server only and is only used for this application.

All my users start getting "out of system resources" errors after just 15 minutes in the program. Even those running PII 350's with 128 mgs of ram.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like the app has a severe memory leak

I have run into this problem before with Sql server 7.0. In my case, the problem was on the server not the workstations. Go into the server properties for Sql server and set a limit on the amount of memory that Sql server uses rather than letting it dynamically allocate what it wants. Also check the box to reserve physical memory for Sql.

apart from answer 2 you could also try to set the paging file to a larger size.

You may also want to check the setting of your memory usage on the server. Go to control panel, double click network, go to the services tab, click server, click properties and make sure that "Maximize Throughput for Network Applications" is selected.

Another thing you could try on the server, if you have more than one partition on the server, you can set up a page file on each partition equal to the size of physical memory in the server.
