Is this only to one address that it doesn't work?
If it is it might be that your IP address and/or domain is on spam list which blocks it from your computer. To troubleshoot this: on the Exchange Server open a command prompt and type telnet mailserver 25, where mailserver is the mx record and/or IP Address to an SMTP server. If you get a reply then you can esteblish an SMTP connection, and try sending mail using SMTP commands;
1. helo domain.com
2. mail from: <name@domain.com>
3. rcpt to: <name@domain.com>
if at this point you received an error see what the error is, other wise proceed.
4. data
5. from:your email addressd
6. to: recipients email address
7.
Blank line

8. .
just a dot.

if you receive an error note the error.
If you can't connect from your exchange server (you get an error when you enter the telnet command). Then check your IP filtering and firewalls.

Verify in the SMTP protocol - Virtual Server - properties, the DELIVERY TAB. In ADVANCED, select "CONFIGURE EXTERNAL DNS" and add the ip address for the external DNS. The outbound delivery only run if the external dns is configured correctly.

Tou have to configure a gateway .

in the address space type * so all smtp trafic wil go by that connector.

Also, this may sound strange, and don't know exactly where you are at in this, BUT with our system I have found that sometimes (don't ask me why as it is still a puzzle) we use the actual IP address for both sides of the email client in lieu of the actual smtp or pop3 NAMES (don't know what you are using). Works for us as a remote site even though our main site doesn't need to.

Create a connector in exchange and tell it to always deliver via DNS.

Make sure that the dns server of the mailserver is your internal dns server. Make sure that forwarders are enabled on the dns server and give it the ip of your isps dns server as a forwarder.
