    Outlook backup

    Locked

    by kevinv ·

    Hello,

I have a customer laptop that has Windows XP Media as an OS. The laptop cannot boot up because of a system32 config error. I am running Knoppix on it now and have moved over all essential files except his outlook emails. How can I do this so I can reinstall windows?

*.pst, but first, why not fix

The outlook email data is stored in a .pst file, which by default is located in c:/documents and settings//Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook. Grab all .pst files from there, and if you want, you can grab the .nk2 file if there is one (the outlook nickname cache).

But before you do all that, why not follow this article and fix his corrupted registry problem without doing a re-install?

Thank you for the info. I just tried the fix and when I type the command md tmp i get this result: “the path or file specified is not valid”

        Any idea?

        Thanks

          Recovery Console or Knoppix

          by churdoo ·

Are you in the recovery console or still using Knoppix?

Sounds like recovery console. Sounds like you should run “chkdsk /p” and see if chkdsk fixes any errors. When that’s complete, run it again and see if it finds errors a second time.

Then try to boot, and if you still have the corrupt hive problem, try the manual repair again per the article and see if it lets you create that tmp directory.

If you still can’t create the tmp directory, anything that gets you write access to the NTFS volume should work, so you could use Knoppix to gain access to the volume and make backup copies of the files in the config directory and copy the pertinent files from the repair directory into the config directory, then reboot and follow the rest of the article.

I was in recovery console. I tried chkdsk /p and I get the message ” the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems”

I searched for any files containg.pst and have found none.
