I need to upgrade about 30 computers from Word 97 to Word 2000, what is the best method – email link setup.exe?, use NT scripting?, or is there another utility I can use without SMS to get the job done?

Check out the Microsoft Office Site. They have a program to deploy Office 2000 products over a network which does not rely upon SMS.

What OS are you running on the network and desktop? We have had a lot of success using Netware Application Launcher (NAL) and Zenworks to deploy new applications from the network.

If all 30 of the PC’s are identical and none of them have user documents stored locally, as well as no special apps (cookie cutter systems) – you could possibly get away with a Norton Ghost Enterprise Edition rollout which deploys a complete harddrive image, right down to the partition.

If not and you need to retain individual system settings – I’d go with the above proposed method of looking at Microsoft’s page for rollout techniques.

The answer is in your question, very simple. NT RESKIT!
(I these are ways I do it cmd_line)

      Commands as follows :
      Rsetup \\workstationame (From: \Ntreskit)
Rclient \\workstationname /l:domain\userid (password query will follow) (you begin a remote CMD SESSION).

Copy exe to drive & run app, user Rkill to view. quick & dirty, if your only doing 30 you may just want to do this…OR (method 2)
If you want, win winat (at) to schedule a install…on that machine, copy file to server & use command (if you have a common server everyone has mapped already this is VERY easy, *:\path\yourapplicaitonhere
third method if you don’t, put it on a machine/server shared to everyone. write a batch to rclient into machines & do the remote at..butfor Just 30 machines as I said, I would just rclient..can do about 10 rclient sessions at one time /10 Rkill to view the install, when it drops off its done make sure to use the silent & nonquery switches when it’s required. Take you about 1 hour toget them all started
