Packard-Bell PC stoped starting up...

By dprice65 ·
It doesn't have video...NO POST...but it starts the drives. It worked perfectly just the other day. I removed all cards and memory and still got no beep codes. It's power supply is running, but it isn't even getting to a screen. HELP! It belongs to a friend, and now it doesn't work. I feel responsible. What could be happening?

Sincerely,

Troubled Technician

Sounds like something internal fried. I suspect the BIOS chip has gone south.

I can't discipline myself enough not to suggest: "Friends don't let friends buy ...." I've worked on literally dozens, as I'm sure you have, and I've come to learn that when they're good, they're good .. but when they're bad, they're bad.

Good luck!

O.J.

Well, well since the drives starts then it must have past POST and there no beep codes.
Check your monitor connections or if you can replace it.
If that not the problem check your video I am assuming that this has on board video.
Good luck.

It starts the drives, but it doesn't give any errors. The monitor and connections work on other PCs, and the video card has been replaced. Still no results. Please suggest more input.

Check and/or replace the power suppy block firs. They tend to fail at start up. The drives need only some of the several voltages from the power supply to start running and, if they do not start to load the OS, then the mobo is not OK. Good luck!

You have got 12 Volts from the power supply.
You know this because the drive motors of the Hard Drives, and the Power Supply fan are 12 Volts.
It sounds like you do not have the 5 Volts (3.3 on newer machines).
The Power good Signal (also 5 volts) will also probably be bad.(at 0 Volts.)
The 5 Volts supplies the MB, CPU, Video Card, etc.
Take a volt meter and check the supply voltages.
Start with the 5 Volts.

The 5 Volt wire is the Red wire. Open the case, and find an extra power connector.
Put the red probe of the voltmeter on the red connector, and the black to the black.
Read the voltage. It should be 5 Volts plus or minus 10 percent.
Regards, Chris
